The Salty Dog is a cocktail of gin or vodka and grapefruit juice and is traditionally served in a highball glass with a salted rim. The addition of salt is the only difference between a Salty Dog and a Greyhound, from which it derives its canine moniker.
Vodka may be used as a substitute for gin; however, it is historically a gin drink.
