Holy Smoke BBQ is tucked away in an area, I like to call restaurant row – in Layton. It is, a little difficult to find if your not using a GPS for the first time. However, this is a good basic BBQ joint.

HS is a simple BBQ joint. It’s not into hyped up fan-fare, in fact I haven’t heard a radio spot, television or internet campaign. I think they do almost zero advertising. I think they do most of this by word of mouth advertising. They also have sidewalk sign (not pictured) illustrating some snarky and humorous note vs. Famous Dave’s.

The Q here is pretty good. It’s straight forward. It has good smoke flavor. You can get a real deal for the ‘average’ eater with their ‘Holy Smoke Platters’ for $9.99 or less:

  • St. Louis Pork Ribs* (they list them Pork – but if you say St. Louis people should know they are  a pork rib)
  • Beef Brisket*
  • Pulled Pork*
  • Quarter Chicken
  • Pulled Chicken
  • Sausage
  • Catfish Fillet
  • Chicken Wings

You can increase your meat in-take by adding an extra meat selection with the same basic 2 side dishes.  I find that the 2 meat is plenty for a healthy eater.  The 3 meat is a good selection if you are wanting to split a meal.  However, if you note the * in the above list – these are the only three that I think are worth ordering.

The sides here are pretty good. They have given them folksy names like ‘Connies Coleslaw’, I don’t know if they are meant for someone real, or they are just that ‘folksy’. Here are the ones that are stand out:

  • Potato Salad: This has bacon in it, has a good bite to it.
  • Coleslaw: This is well seasoned, has a cream based dressing – a classic
  • Fried Pickles: These are thin, and can run a little salty – but if you like this like we do, it’s really good.
  • Corn Muffins: Get the room temperature butter at the condiment bar, really nice side

This place also does Meat by the Pound. It is best that you call ahead, and they will have it ready for you. Note that they have it at $12.99 a LB. You might think that it’s pricey. However, if you think about it – after you buy the meat, season it, buy the smoking rig, the wood and your time – it’s a pretty good deal if your not going go ‘whole hog’ into the hole BBQ subculture.

We recommend Holy Smoke BBQ – give it a try the next time you are hungry for Famous Dave’s, I am sure that the ‘Not-so-famous Jeff’ would appreciate it. (He is the Owner)
